How It All Started – The Internship Programme of German Business
I’m Elvira Memeti from Skopje, North Macedonia, a recent graduate of Contemporary Sciences and Technologies. Thanks to the Zoran Djindjic Internship Programme of German Business, I had the incredible opportunity to spend six months in Germany, doing an internship as a Software Engineer at GMV in Darmstadt. This experience was truly life-changing, both professionally and personally, and I’m excited to share my journey.
Being an intern at GMV – A Gateway to the Space Industry
For six months, I worked as a Software Engineer Intern at GMV, a multinational company that specializes in technology solutions across industries like aerospace, defense, cybersecurity, and AI. One of the most exciting aspects of GMV is its collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). This meant that my work was directly linked to real space missions, something I had only dreamed of before!
At GMV, I had the chance to work alongside brilliant engineers, contribute to real projects, and expand my technical knowledge. The company culture was inspiring—everyone was supportive, and I always felt encouraged to ask questions and take on challenges. It was fascinating to see how software plays a critical role in space missions, and I felt proud to be part of a company that contributes to such cutting-edge projects.

Life in Darmstadt and Exploring Frankfurt
Darmstadt is a small but lively city known as the ‘City of Science.’ It has a strong international community, and I quickly felt at home. The city offers a perfect mix of history, nature, and modern technology. Some of my favorite places were:
• Mathildenhöhe – A UNESCO World Heritage site with unique architecture.
• Herren Garten Park – A beautiful spot to relax and enjoy nature.
• Merck-Stadion – If you love football, catching a game here is a must!
One of the best parts of living in Darmstadt was how close it is to Frankfurt—just a 20-minute train ride away! Frankfurt is a dynamic city with endless things to do:
• Zeil Shopping Street – The ultimate destination for shopping lovers.
• Römerberg – The historic heart of Frankfurt, full of stunning old buildings.
• The Main Tower – For an amazing view of the city skyline!
• Museumsufer – A riverside district packed with world-class museums.

More than just an internship – Friendships and Cultural Exchange
One of the most amazing things about this Programme is the people you meet. From day one, I was introduced to other scholarship holders from the Countries of the Western Balkans and Croatia who were also selected for internships in Germany. We became a close-knit group, sharing our experiences, traveling together, and learning from one another.
This cultural exchange was one of the biggest highlights of my journey. I not only gained valuable work experience but also built friendships that I know will last a lifetime.
Final Thoughts – Why You Should Apply
Looking back, this internship was one of the best decisions of my life. It gave me:
• Hands-on experience at an international tech company.
• Insight into the space industry through GMV’s work with ESA.
• A chance to live in Germany and explore new cities.
• Lifelong friendships and professional connections.
If you are a student or recent graduate looking for an international experience, professional growth, and cultural exchange, I highly encourage you to apply for this amazing Programme. It’s more than just an internship—it’s a life-changing opportunity.
